Overview
A flash drive is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. Flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, and physically much smaller than an optical disc. Most weigh less than 30 grams (1 oz).
Flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy disks or CDs were used, i.e. for storage, data back-up and transfer of computer files. However, flash drives are a newer technology and have a number of advantages over their predecessors.
Advantages of flash drives over floppy disks include:
-Flash drives are smaller in size and more portable than floppy disks.
-Flash drives have much larger storage capacities than floppy disks (up to 128GB).
-Flash drives are faster than floppy disks, with a typical USB 2.0 flash drive having a read speed of up to 30MB/s and a write speed of up to 10MB/s.
-Flash drives are more durable than floppy disks, with no moving parts to break or become damaged.
-Flash drives are less likely to be damaged by magnetic fields than floppy disks.
-Flash drives do not need to be formatted before use, unlike floppy disks.
-Flash drives are supported by all major operating systems.
Buyer's Guide
Planning to buy a flash drive?
When it comes to buying a flash drive, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind in order to get the best possible product for your needs. To start, consider the amount of storage space you’ll need. A good rule of thumb is to get a drive that’s at least double the amount of storage you think you’ll need, as files can take up more space than you expect. Next, think about the type of files you’ll be storing on the drive. If you’ll be storing mainly large video or audio files, you’ll want to make sure you get a drive with a high transfer speed so that you can quickly and easily move files back and forth. On the other hand, if you’re mainly storing small text files or images, transfer speed won’t be as big of a concern. Finally, take a look at the different features offered by different drives and choose one that has the features that are most important to you. Some drives come with encryption software to help keep your data safe, while others offer password protection. Some are even water-resistant, in case of accidental spills. By keeping these things in mind, you can be sure to find the perfect flash drive for your needs.Rankings
